AKC and AKC Companion Animal Recovery Continue Disaster Relief Efforts During Busy Hurricane Season with "Ike" in Texas.


AKC and AKC Companion Animal Recovery have continued sending supplies and offering assistance during the busy 2008 Hurricane season with the arrival of Ike in Texas.


Hundreds of crates, collars, bowls, leashes, ex-pens and other supplies totaling more than $21,000 have been shipped to the Gulf Region to care for animals that have been displaced because of Ike, many of which are return evacuees from Hurricane Gustav. AKC CAR also provided 1,000 microchips and several scanners to assist in the relief effort.


AKC and AKC CAR also contacted area kennel clubs in Texas offering assistance to help with any club disaster response. Through the assistance of Carol Williamson, Delegate from the Houston Kennel Club, supplies were provided to the Harris County Animal Control Department to care for additional animals.


The Caddo Kennel Club of Texas was also instrumental in securing crates for the Marshall Animal Control department which was housing displaced companion animals from Hurricane Ike.

With the help of the Florida Association of Kennel Clubs, and AKC Delegate Diane Albers, organizations such as the Humane Society of Louisiana in Tylertown, MS, and others located in Texas and Louisiana have also received supplies to help care for evacuated companion animals and those animals displaced from area shelters because of the storm.


As always, AKC and AKC CAR are in communication with AKC Club officers and state emergency personnel in disaster regions should they require our assistance. Supplies are purchased from donations to the AKC CAR Canine Support and Relief Fund.
