This year, as part of the AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days program, sponsored by PetPartners, Inc., we’re celebrating the 25th birthday of the Canine Good Citizen® (CGC®) program. With the CGC program’s emphasis on good manners at home and in the community, it’s a perfect fit for AKC RDO Days. Hundreds of CGC tests are held at AKC RDO Days around the country each year.

To honor the important role CGC plays in promoting responsible dog ownership, we’ve included a free CGC test kit ($20 value) in our AKC RDO Days kits this year. The AKC RDO Days kit and free CGC test kit are available to the first 600 clubs and organizations that register their AKC RDO Days event. Sign-up at or email your event details to You’ll receive an event approval email and then automatically receive the free materials.

The program has also been expanded this year to encompass events held outside the month of September. Clubs are now welcome to hold an AKC RDO Days event at any time. Hosting one still qualifies as a Major Activity on the Eligibility Requirements to Host Future Dog Shows list.

Don't forget to document your AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days efforts, either! We give $1,000 to three outstanding club events each year as part of the Community Achievement Award program. Learn more about the award here.

If you're in the North Carolina area, join us at the Flagship AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day in Raleigh on September 20th. A full list of events and activities is available at Local clubs are invited to participate, so please contact if you’re interested in a booth at the event.

I hope your club will take part in AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days this year. Visit our AKC RDO Days resource center to sign the AKC Responsible Dog Owner Pet Promise, to find other events in your area or to print materials that will help you publicize your event. Thanks, as always, for your dedication to responsible dog ownership.
