Do you know a canine hero that deserves to be recognized? Nominations for the 2014 AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE) are now open! Celebrating dogs and the selfless things they do for their owners and our country each and every day is one of the most enjoyable things we do at AKC.

Each story submitted uncovers tales of true heroism whether it’s a search and rescue dog that saves a child’s life, a service dog assisting our military and war veterans, a K-9 that uncovers true crimes against humanity or even a family pet that has saved its family from a burning fire. The stories truly exemplify all of the important things dogs do for us.

Since the program’s inception 15 years ago in 2000:

  • 70 ACEs have been awarded.

  • Dogs of 30 different breeds and from 25 states have won ACEs.

  • The all-time ACE-winning breed is the German Shepherd Dog, with 12 awards, followed by Labrador Retrievers with 7 and Golden Retrievers with 6.

  • Rare-breed ACE-winners include a Kuvasz, Canaan Dog, Anatolian Shepherd, and Spinone Italiano.

  • Many ACE winners have been top-winning show dogs, field trial champions, and winners at the highest levels of competitive obedience and agility. The most famous of these was Rufus, the Bull Terrier who went Best in Show at Westminster in 2006 and later won the 2007 Therapy ACE.

New for 2014 is the renaming of the Law Enforcement Category to Uniformed Service K-9. This category name change better reflects the dogs that are part of the uniformed services that may not technically be classified as law-enforcement agencies, such as the military, firefighters, customs and border patrol and emergency services. We are especially looking for nominations in this category.

We’re also looking for exceptional dogs in the categories of Therapy Dog, Service Dog, Search and Rescue Dog and Exemplary Companion.

We hope you’ll help us spread the word about the AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence by sharing the program with anyone that you know owns a dog doing great things.
