New York, NY – The American Kennel Club® (AKC®) announced recently that the Borzoi Club of America (BCOA) has been named a recipient of the AKC Community Achievement Award for the creation of the disaster preparedness website ReadyBorzoi©. BCOA received one of two awards for the first quarter of 2011 – Cindy Bundy of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of America also received recognition.
The AKC Community Achievement Awards support and recognize outstanding public education and legislation efforts of AKC-affiliated clubs, AKC-recognized federations and their members. The AKC selects award recipients who promote purebred dogs and responsible dog ownership within their communities or who have successfully introduced, monitored and responded to legislative issues affecting dog ownership.
In response to disasters across the United States, particularly Hurricane Katrina, and in recognition of the leadership role clubs play, the Borzoi Club of America launched a comprehensive disaster preparedness website called ReadyBorzoi© (http://www.borzoiclubofamerica.org/
The site is a one-stop virtual kiosk for details on types of disasters, readiness kit information, links to state disaster plans, shelter contacts, key information on everyday emergencies, online publications, law and governance issues, insights on donating and charities, and multiple tools and links. In addition, a Buddy List was established composed of a network of BCOA members in every state who are willing and able to provide assistance such as boarding, transport, or supplies.
BCOA ReadyBorzoi©, while based on federal and state educational materials for pet owners, goes far beyond the generic information that is scattered on multiple platforms. The site is breed-specific, strongly encourages Borzoi owners to create their own disaster preparedness plans, and offers them the tools and information required to do so.
The guide is online and part of the parent club website. An icon on the front page links the visitor to the ReadyBorzoi© pages. Members are also encouraged to list the link on their own hobby sites to further emphasize disaster preparedness.
"With the comprehensive tools they have provided, the Borzoi Club of America has prepared Borzoi owners for any potential disaster and ensured that their members stand a better chance of protecting their pets, family and property in the event a disaster occurs," said Sheila Goffe, AKC's Director of Government Relations. Â "We encourage other clubs to take a look at the website and use it as an example when creating their own disaster plans. Congratulations to BCOA and we are pleased to award them a Community Achievement Award."
Nominations for the AKC Community Achievement Awards are accepted year-round. Up to three honorees are named each quarter. They receive a certificate of appreciation and a $1,000 check payable to the club or federation's public education and canine legislation efforts.
