On Saturday, September 4th, the Canterbury region of New Zealand experienced a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that caused considerable damage to the city of Christchurch and surrounding districts. Miraculously there was no loss of life as a result of this disaster but extensive damage was done to commercial and residential properties extending to many billions of dollars.
After the disaster, many American Kennel Club fanciers and club members expressed a desire to assist the dog show community in New Zealand. AKC Companion Animal Recovery collected donations through its Canine Support and Relief Fund and recently made a $2000 (USD) donation to the New Zealand Kennel Club to assist with disaster relief.
The Canterbury region is the largest South Island community of dog enthusiasts and some have been majorly affected by the earthquake. The Executive Council of the New Zealand Kennel Club in close co-operation with the Canterbury Kennel Association will endeavor to provide assistance, where possible, to any of the affected members.
