In order to expand our knowledge about disaster planning and response, AKC and AKC CAR staff members, Ariela Schulman and Jason Miller, AKC Board member, Dr. Patricia Haines, and AKC Delegates, Susan Hamil and Carol Williamson, attended the AVMA National Animal Disaster Summit outside Washington, DC on May 5 and 6, 2006.

The Summit addressed some of the issues uncovered during the 2005 hurricane season and attendees worked to identify ways to improve future disaster planning/preparation and disaster response. Discussions covered topics including communications, logistics/resource management, animal evacuation plans and volunteer management. Attendees from different agencies -- governmental and non-governmental -- had the opportunity to network and begin building contacts of responders and resources.

A report from the Summit will be published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and will include details of the conference.
