Obama Signs Defense Bill Allowing Military Dogs To Retire In US

On Wednesday evening, President Barack Obama signed the annual defense spending bill that will now allow American military dogs to retire in the U.S. The policy update on military animals was one of many in the $607-billion 2016 National Defense Authorization Act, according to the Military Times

This law requires that military dogs return to the U.S. to be retired and will give handlers the first chance to acquire the dogs once they are retired, per Voice of America. Before, military dogs were retired overseas and it was extremely difficult for handlers to take the dogs back to the U.S.
