New Jersey Senate Resolution 102, sponsored by Senator Jeff Van Drew, endorses the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen Program and supports its efforts to promote responsible dog ownership. The resolution will be considered by the Senate Economic Growth Committee on Thursday, January 29. AKC encourages all New Jersey residents to contact the members of the committee and Sen. Van Drew to express support of SR 102.

The American Kennel Club® believes that owning a dog is a rewarding experience that brings great joy and happiness to any household. With dog ownership comes long-term emotional and financial commitment and a variety of responsibilities. We encourage owners to provide proper care, training and socialization to ensure that their pets remain happy members of their family, respectable members of the community and well-mannered canine good citizens. AKC and its affiliated clubs offer a wide range of educational programs and materials to teach dog owners how to reach these goals while enjoying their dogs for many years to come.

Started in 1989, AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs that pass the 10-step CGC test earn the CGC title and receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. The CGC Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. As owners work with their dog to teach the CGC skills, they discover the many benefits and joys of training their dog. Training enhances the bond between owner and dog. Dogs that have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with—they respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high-quality life.
