Yesterday, after amending the bill to have it conform to its House companion, the Minnesota Senate Agricultural and Veterans Committee voted down Senate File 7.  The bill sought to regulate the activities of dog owners/breeders who possess six or more adult intact female dogs. This action effectively prohibits further consideration of SF 7 by the Minnesota Senate.

The companion bill to SF 7, House File 253, is still under consideration by the House Agriculture and Veterans Affairs Committee.  It remains unclear whether any committee member plans to take action on that bill.

The American Kennel Club congratulates the many concerned responsible dog breeders and owners in Minnesota who reached out to their legislators since the bill was introduced in January 2009.  The AKC was pleased to assist them by issuing alerts to Minnesota breeders, fanciers, and AKC officials, and by sending letters and providing fact sheets.

Based on information received from key constituents in Minnesota, the AKC Government Relations Department expects that the issue of breeder regulations will be considered by the Minnesota legislature in the future.  Please return to the Legislative Alerts section of the AKC website for the latest information from Minnesota and around the country.
