The range of sizes among dog breeds is greater than that of any other animal. For example, a 150-pound Newfoundland is 50 times the size of a three-pound Pomeranian. And as you might expect, large breed puppies and small breed puppies have very different nutritional needs. There are general rules for feeding any puppy, but varying growth rates play a big role in the nutritional needs of small and large breed puppies.

Small dog breeds (those that weigh less than 22 pounds at adulthood) grow very quickly and typically reach adulthood between 8 and 10 months.

Large-breed puppies will weigh more than 50 pounds when full-grown. It takes these big guys about 15 months to reach adulthood, and puppies expected to weigh over 100 pounds at maturity take 18 to 24 months to reach their adult size. If they grow too quickly, they can develop problems with their joints and bones. Reduced-calorie foods with less calcium can help support the proper growth rate for large breeds.

Royal Canin works with animal nutritionists, dog breeders, and veterinarians to develop science-based dog food formulas for both large and small breed dogs based on age, lifestyle, breed, and special needs.  The brand offers more than 200 different formulas, each with more than 50 nutrients in precise balance to supply the most effective nutrition possible.

Royal Canin offers breed-specific nutrition for a wide range of purebred dogs and puppies including:

Small breeds such as the Chihuahua, Dachshund, Shih Tzu, and Yorkshire Terrier. Large breeds such as the Labrador Retriever, Bulldog, and German Shepherd.

With so many pet foods on the market, it's tough to know what's right for your dog. You can ask a breeder or veterinarian for advice, but it's up to you to see how the food affects your dog. If your dog's energy level is right for his breed and age, if his skin and coat are healthy, if his stools are firm and brown, and if he seems to be in overall good health, then what you are feeding may be adequate. To help those who may not be aware of the distinct nutritional needs of their purebred pets, Royal Canin is hosting breed events at local PetSmart stores. Interactive in-store education will provide breed physiology information, related challenges, and how nutrition can help. The Royal Canin sales team will be on hand to share information and answer questions. You can find an event near you and a coupon by clicking here.
