What’s New from AKC Government Relations
Are you headed to Orlando in December for the AKC National Championship Dog Show presented by Royal Canin? We invite you to visit the AKC Government Relations booth on December 17-18 — we’d love to meet you. Look for us next to the main AKC booth.
While you’re there, please check out a fundraiser to benefit the AKC Canine Legislation Support Fund (CLSF). For a donation of $25, you could win an exciting experience at Seaworld® Orlando, including special behind-the-scenes access, swimming with the dolphins, hotel accommodations, and a gift card to use toward airfare. This experience was generously donated by Julian Prager and Jack McDaniel to the AKC Canine Legislation Support Fund on behalf of the National Animal Interest Alliance.
Stop by the AKC Government Relations booth on Saturday or Sunday in Orlando for more details. If you’re not attending the AKC National Championship, please contact AKC Government Relations at firstname.lastname@example.org or 919-816-3720 to find out how you can donate to the CLSF and get your chance to win.
As election results are finalized across the country, now is a good time to reach out to your newly-elected legislators. This month’s Taking Command includes a communications action plan for dog advocates. And if you wish to recognize incumbent federal or state legislators who have worked on behalf of dogs and dog owners, consider nominating them for the AKC Legislator of the Year Award. For more information and a nomination form, please send a request to email@example.com.
All 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia will hold legislative sessions in 2017. Bills in most states (Virginia and New Jersey are exceptions) that didn’t pass in 2016 will be “dead” at the end of this year; therefore, it's time to get ready for the introduction of new legislation. Look for the most up-to-date information on federal and state resolutions and bills that affect dog owners at www.akc.org/goverment-relations or www.akcgr.org. Both websites give you access to AKC’s Legislation Tracking page and recent legislative alerts.
Please remember, we rely on you to let us know us when canine legislation is proposed at the county and city levels. Contact (919) 816-3720 or firstname.lastname@example.org to let us know when new laws are discussed or introduced in your community.
