The Santa Fe County Commission will hold a second public hearing on a proposal that would impact county dog owners and fanciers.
The proposal is over 30 pages of updates to the county’s animal control laws and include many concerning provisions, including impounding and sterilizing any dog not in a fenced yard – even if the dog is on the owner’s private property. Other provisions include requiring all dog owners to have a fenced yard or kennel run, strict language that may never allow a dog off leash in public – even for dog training, agility, or other classes – and inspections for anyone that breeds a litter. The commission stated at the September 13 hearing that they were receiving many communications on the issue, and they are raising some questions. It is imperative that they continue to hear from responsible dog owners, breeders, and fanciers that reside or participate in events in Santa Fe County. Much attention is being given to the fencing provisions, but little to no discussion has been made of the many other concerns. Even if you have already done so, please consider contacting the county again and expressing comments on this proposal.
