Dear AKC Delegates, Judges, Club Officers and Breeders,

The Oklahoma Board of Commercial Pet Breeders has moved its Rules Hearing regarding proposed regulations for the commercial breeder law (SB 1712) passed by the Oklahoma legislature earlier this year.

Here is the revised location information:

Oklahoma Board of Commercial Pet Breeders Hearing Information

December 9th, 2010
4:00 P.M.
3700 N. Walker Avenue
Oklahoma City, OK 73118

A copy of the proposed regulations can be found here. Although the regulations must reflect the underlying statute they enforce, these proposed regulations contain many problematic provisions that reach beyond the underlying statute and will cause needless and unintended harm to responsible dog owners and breeders.

Responsible dog owners and breeders are encouraged to attend the Board’s rules hearing to respectfully comment on the proposed regulations.  Information for the hearing’s new location and time is listed below.

The AKC believes that breeding programs should be undertaken responsibly for the purpose of preserving breed characteristics and producing healthy, well-socialized purebred puppies.  AKC strongly opposes the breeding of dogs by those who do so without regard for the dogs’ welfare.  Any regulations promulgated by the Board of Commercial Pet Breeders should look to these ideals, without creating undue hardships for pet breeders throughout Oklahoma.

A copy of AKC’s formal letter and comments to the Board can be read here. Talking points, as well as a letter writing guide and sample letter for your convenience in writing to the Board, can be found here.  For other questions or concerns you may contact AKC at doglaw@akc.org
