A resolution was approved yesterday in the New York Senate calling on the Governor to declare March 13 as “K9 Veterans Appreciation Day” in the state.  This resolution, sponsored by Senator Kathleen Marchione of Saratoga County, recognizes the many ways in which “military working dogs, past and present,….have served our nation.”

Senate Resolution J 4181 includes numerous examples of ways military dogs have provided “valuable service and protection”, and recognizes the Dogs for Defense organization established by the American Kennel Club in 1942.  “This vital organization,” the resolution reads, “trained dogs for coastal sentry duty for the United States Army.” 

The resolution goes on to recognize that these dogs “have knowingly placed themselves in harm’s way, often making the ultimate sacrifice by laying down their lives for their partners.”
