AKC Companion Events announced 243 new Versatile Companion Dog titles earned as of December 31, 2001. Golden Retrievers lead the way with 26 VCD1, 16 VCD2 and 6 VCD3 titles. German Shepherds, BelginTervurens and Labrador Retrievers each had 11 new VCD1 titles. The list of breeds completing the VCD at all levels is varied. After one year, Patricia Krause, Assistant Vice President of Companion Events, is thrilled to see the variety of breeds that have attained the American Kennel Club VCD titles. She states, "It is exciting to see that so many breeds are represented in these numbers. It is proof that all kinds of dogs love to do different kinds of work for the owners that they love."
Since January 1, 2001 the American Kennel Club has recognized dogs that show versatility in Companion Events by earning a combination of titles in obedience, agility and tracking.
The AKC permits the use of the letters following the name of each registered dog that completes titles as follows:
Versatile Companion Dog 1 (VCD1) - CD, NA, NAJ, TDAdditionally, the AKC permits the use of the letters VCCH preceding the name of each dog that completes titles as follows:
Versatile Companion Dog 2 (VCD2) - CDX, OA, OAJ, TD
Versatile Companion Dog 3 (VCD3) - UD, AX, AXJ, TDX
Versatile Companion Dog 4 (VCD4) - UDX, MX, MXJ, VST
Versatile Companion Champion (VCCH) - OTCH, MACH, CTThe first to receive a VCD title was a Weimaraner, CH Seabreeze Seraphim, VCD1, TDX, owned by Richard S. Craig and Jane A. Craig of Jupiter, Florida, completing the final requirement on January 1, 2001.
Another premiere first was Graber's Aspenridge Stoney J, VCD2, AX, AXJ, a Golden Retriever owned by Faith Jones of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, who earned the first VCD2 on January 5, 2001.
The first VCD3 was earned by a Golden Retriever, OTCH Sunfire's Undeniable, VCD3, UDX, MH, owned by Thaddeus Charles Jones and Patricia Jones of Katy, Texas, who completed this feat on January 28, 2001.
The Companion Events department congratulates each and every titleholder who, to date, has shown that their dog can compete in more than one event.
The owners and breeders of these dogs should feel equally proud. I know the Fancy will join me in congratulating them on accomplishing a tremendous goal.
