Twin Towers Park in Fairborn Ohio was the site of the OKI Gazehound Organizations September 13 & 14 Lure Coursing Tests and Trials. The trial committee, headed by Chairman Don White, had the grounds well prepared and secretary Shara Ryan had all the paperwork organized and ready for the judges and the hounds. Both days began with the Junior Courser Test, where dogs are tested on their ability to complete a 600 yards course with enthusiasm and without interruption. This is the first exposure to coursing for many dogs and is the first time some sight hounds have the chance to run. Judges Fances Abrams and Stephanie Norris were able to award qualifying scores to many of the dogs in the test.
The Trial classes drew dogs from as far as St. Louis to run for Championship points and ultimately for the Best in Field award. The course was over 700 yards covering the large grass field. The course designers had made full use of the hillside to offer the dogs a challenging run.
The Saturday trial came down to a Best in Field run between 5 hounds. After two very competitive courses, the judges awarded Best in Field to the Pharaoh Hound, Ch. Jamara Mystic Taavi Ray, SC owned by Ronni Fisher and Marie Henke.
Sunday's Best in Field run was between three hounds, all excellent coursers.
The whippet, the Borzoi and the Ridgeback were evenly matched and gave the
spectators a demonstration of how a course should be run. All three hounds
were intent on the lure on each other. At one point, when the lure changed
directions, the whippet, using its superior turning ability, actually ran
under the Ridgeback, at full speed, neither hound breaking stride or losing
any speed. Judge Jeff Leonard was hard pressed to determine the winner,
but awarded the day to the Borzoi, Teine Firdbird Vanishing Point, SC owned
by Autumn Midgarden.
