Retriever Hunting Tests

Sooner Retriever Club Spring Hunting Test
Meeker, Okla. - May 17-18, 2008
By Milton S. Holcombe, senior field representative

On May 17-18, the Sooner Retriever Club hosted their Spring Hunting Test for retrievers near Meeker, Okla. The event was held on nice grounds owned and provided by Bill and Brenda Blochowiak, Lou Bruce and Robert and Ruby Bruce.

The Event Committee, composed of Chairman Bill Cummins, Event Secretary Max Uhlenhake, Al Honeycutt, Bill Blochowiak, Chris Richards and Robert McDow, did a good job of organizing and keeping the event running smoothly.

The Master stake, due to having a total of 68 entries, had to be split in A and B divisions with 34 dogs in each. Master A was judged by Tim Buck of Lexington, Tex., and Daniel Elkins of Dripping Springs, Tex. Master B was judged by Larry Kimble of Independence, Kansas and Gloria Mundell of Lakewood, Colo. Both divisions of Master did a nice job of presenting the contestants with challenging, yet fair, tests. They also did a good job of not just meeting the minimum requirements for Master tests, but actually presenting tests that surpassed the minimums. For example, both Masters first series consisted of delayed quadruple-marked retrieves and double-blind retrieves.

The doubleheader Junior and Senior tests were judged by Dorothy Ruehman of Richmond, Tex. and Thomas Traylor of Wichita, Kan. Rich Sinclair of Wichita, Kan., and Don Davis of Sedgwick, Kan., judged the other stake. They swapped out judging the Junior one day and the Senior the other and did a good job.
