Retriever Hunting Tests

Pinelands Retriever Club of New Jersey
Winslow, NJ - August 30-31, 2008
by Chuck Kimbrel, AKC Field Representative

A few years back a group of Retriever enthusiast living in the southeast Pennsylvania / southern New Jersey area had a dream to start up a new Retriever club in the hopes of obtaining AKC licensed for Retriever Hunt Test. On the weekend of August 30-31, 2008 that dream became a reality as the Pinelands Retriever Club hosted their first AKC licensed Retriever hunt test.

The club has been working very diligently with the New Jersey Fish and Game Department to procure state grounds for their events. After many club work days, they were granted permission for the use of the Winslow Wildlife area near Hammonton, N.J.. This was also the first event to be held on these grounds. The club greatly appreciates the cooperation of the Fish and Game Department in making these grounds available.

For their first licensed event the club elected to host a single Master, Senior, and Junior stakes. A total of 91 dogs were entered in the event.

The Master stake judged by Warren Price and Auggie Argabright ran on Saturday and had a total entry of 27 dogs. The judges put up three very nice master level test and at conclusion 10 dogs had received qualifying scores.

The Saturday Senior and Sunday Junior Tests were judged by Dan and Carol Lewis along with Senior Apprentice judge Elizabeth Wise Vaughn. Saturday's Senior Test featured two very nice senior level test and at conclusion 14 had received qualifying scores. The Sunday Junior Test featured four single marks, two on land and two on waters.

Club President Joe Eschert along with Event Chairman Richard Young and Event Secretary Rachel Young and Committee members Karen Deman, Lori Jasenak, Dee Bailey, Bob VonSuskil and Joe Eschert did and excellent job putting on the event. All in attendance had a great time. Hopefully this will be the first of many more great events to come.
