Spinone Club of America Hunt Tests
Flash Clips:
Clip 1
Even a shower on Sunday morning couldn't dampen the spirits of the dogs and handlers onsite at Spindle Mill Pond in Hustle, VA for the Spinone Club of America's spring all-breed hunt tests on March 20th and 21st. With 33 dogs entered on Saturday, and 29 on Sunday, it was a perfect weekend to watch our sporting dogs do what they were bred to do; find those birds! For the uninitiated, the Spinone Italiano is sometimes called the Clydesdale of the sporting dog world. They are large, square dogs with a distinctive head and wiry coat, thick skin, and eyes which are often described as being so human in appearance that you would swear that there was a person inside that dog suit. Of course, no one has told these gentle giants that they are mighty hunters alone; most consider themselves to be lap dogs as well. If the breed sounds ideal to you so far, beware the beard!
These dogs are geniuses when it comes to spatter-painting your ceilings and walls, and owners frequently bemoan that fact that there is no industrial application for the Spinone "meringue" that they produce in abundance. Though the Spinone is an ancient Italian breed, it has only recently gained full recognition from the AKC. As such we are pleased to see the number of dogs that are actively pursuing hunting titles. This weekend alone, we saw two new Spinoni Senior Hunters finish their qualifying efforts, several new Junior Hunters, and two dogs start working on their Master Hunter titles as well. The Spinone Club of America invites all pointing breeds to participate in the next all-breed test in October 2004.
