Shetland Sheepdog Club of Memphis, TN: Herding Event

by Karla Deithorn, Executive Field Representative

Temperatures hovered near 100 degrees on July 10th and 11th but the Shetland Sheepdog Club of Memphis, TN beat the heat by starting the first handlers meetings at 6:30am. They finished by 10am both days while the breeze was still wafting through the oaks and cypress on the A.U. McElvoy farm in Risco, MO. It was a small trial weekend with 17 trial and 2 PT entries on Saturday, and 15 trial and 2 PT entries on Sunday. Jim New's St. Croix and St. Croix/Dorper cross sheep were up to testing the dogs and there were some lovely runs by a variety of breeds. Besides the expected Shetland Sheepdogs from the club, there were Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Australian Cattle Dogs, Border Collies, an Australian Shepherd and an Old English Sheepdog.

On Sunday Souixsan Palmer's Shetland Sheepdog, Northlight Dances with Wool, CD, PT, OA, OAJ finished his HSAs title with a nice run that earned him a third place. Dawn Pecora, who is President of the Club, earned the PT title on both her Sheltie boys, First Light the Red Vineyard and First Light On Course.

High In Trial both days was J. Wade Campbell's Border Collie, HC Wildfire's Maccallum More, CD, TD with a nice run in the Advanced class.

Reserve High In Trial on Saturday came from the started class with Handler Debbie Hunott doing a fine job with Dianne Williamson's Border Collie, Windmeup Cookie. Sunday, Reserve High In Trial was J. Wade Campbell's Border Collie, Roy XI, HXAs, HIBs in the Advanced class.

Diane Lemons' Australian Cattledog, CH Speckled Legacy of Vegas, CD, HIC placed 3rd (left) in the Started class on Sat. and 5th on Sunday. The Old English Sheepdog (right), Summerwinds Simply Irristable handled by Pam Wolf for owners Dawn Joyce, and Kathy and Marta Menshew moved up to the Intermediate Class and won the class Sat. and placed second on Sunday.

The only Australian Shepherd there owned and handled by Jack George in the Started class placed second on Sat. and went on to first place on Sunday.

While he did not place, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, CH Sua Mah Hail To The Chief, HSA handled by Pam Wolf for owners Judy and Tony Hart qualified both days in Advanced.

It may have been a small trial weekend but the dogs showed some excellent work; the sheep cooperated well; the grounds were shady and breezy and the Shetland Sheepdog Club of Memphis, TN put on a great event. I look forward to attending more of their events in the future and can highly recommend them to any herding enthusiast in the area.
