The first series of the National Open Championship kicked off at 7:30am Sunday morning with a land double followed by a land blind. The first bird down was a control bird (pheasant hen) thrown from left to right at a distance of approximately 250 yards. This bird landed in mid-thigh high cover. The second bird of the double was a flyer rooster pheasant, landing in various cover ranging from mid-thigh to knee high cover. The bird was at a distance of approximately 200 to 225 yards. As the dog returned from the retrieve of the first bird (the flyer), both stations retired. The control station into pine trees and the flyer station into a camo holding blind. The field used for the test had been mowed in a checkerboard fassion. This gave the dogs lots of problems maintaining the proper line to birds.
After completing the marks, the dogs then moved to the right, to a new line from which they run a land blind. The bird was placed at the base of a small pine tree at a distance of approximately 200 yards. The dogs had to take a line across a road, continue on a down hill slope and then proceed up another hill side. While the cover was light, terrain often caused dogs to either want to roll up or down hill at various points.
The wind varied throughout the day from being non-existant to blowing up to five miles per hour. This was a major factor for many dogs as they could not wind birds when in the area of the fall.
