Retriever Weekend in Connecticut

By Chuck Kimbrel – Executive Staff-Field Representative

On the weekend of October 1-3, 2010 the small Connecticut hamlets of West Thompson and Woodstock hosted two retriever events.  Those that attended the events were treated to some early fall New England colors and very comfortable temperatures.

The Yankee Golden Retriever Club held their fall hunt test on the grounds of the West Thompson Reservoir; with a total entry of 116; the event featured a Master, Senior and Junior hunter stake.  In the Master stake judges, Dawn Terill, David Williams and Apprentice Judge Marsha Wilcox, set three challenging test for the 59 dogs entered and at conclusion a total of 20 were qualified.  The senior stake judges were Sandy Stiger and Mary Beth Corsini.  The stake had a total of 25 entries and 14 received qualifying scores.  In the junior stake judges Doris Aylward and Catherine Forsyth had a total entry of 32 with 18 receiving qualification.

A few miles away the Colonial Retriever Field Trial club held their fall field trial at Peakebrooke Farms, owned by Dr. James Dean.  Over several years Dr. Dean has developed his farm into a great venue for both Retriever field trials and hunt test, and allows several New England clubs to host events on these grounds.

The Colonial Retriever clubs event featured three stakes, Open All-Age, Amateur All-Age and derby.  Judges for the Open were Mike Kates of Hainesport, N.J. and Phyllis McGinn of Oxford, Md.  They presented four very difficult tests over the weekend and upon the conclusion the following dogs placed in the Open.
