West Texas Brittany Club Field Trial
The location was the Nancy Lee Ranch south of Brownwood, Texas for the West Texas Brittany club. The grounds here are encompassing 4600 acres and consist of slightly rolling terrain with live oaks, shinnery and some yucca plants. The grasses ar native sage grass and thanks to a lot of rain, the cover was really good for wild quail. This club uses electronic call boxes and that brings the birds out from hiding. They have plenty of them and move them quite often. This works very well as they moved at least 12 coveys of wild birds along with plenty of finds on liberated birds.
The club runs the usual stakes one would run at a regional trial. The main one everyone comes for is the one hour Amateur all age stake. This is a one hour grueling hunt for birds and the dog must handle to get around the tighter courses. The bottom line is the dog must finish and prove that he or she can complete the hour with plenty to spare.
This stake brings amateurs in from all over the country. It is one of the top amateur stakes and many want this win under there dogs accomplishments. Dogs that have won this have come from as far as Maine.
The club picks very well known judges from around the country and this one was no exception as they called on Roscoe Saton from the Kansas city, Missouri area. The other Judge was Jack Murphy from Nowata, Oklahoma. Between the two of them they share a wealth of experince in the bird dog world.
The winners were Red, a Brittany female owned and handled by the personable Tom Milam. Red ran on the first course in the first brace and had three finds and a stop to flush. Everyone knew the pattern had been set and this would be tough to beat. The 2nd place dog was Clark owned and handled by Jim Crawford. The third and fourth place dogs were handled by Ed Tillson from Alberqueque, New Mexico.
