Vizsla Club of America National Gun Dog Championship and National Open Puppy

By Bonnie Hidalgo, AKC Executive Field Representative

The 2013 VCA National Gun Dog Championship was held at Rocky Mountain Roosters Hunting Preserve near Calhan, CO on April 5 thru 8. The event was hosted by the Rocky Mountain Vizsla Club with Joan Heimbach serving as Chairperson and Janice Branham as Event Secretary. This year's event drew the largest entry in the history of the NGDC with 42 entries in the Championship and 15 in the Open Puppy.

The committee worked well together and all bases were covered. The event was a home run. Committee members besides the Chair and Secretary included Chet & Jody Beckley, Jim & Cindy Mueller, Mel Reveles and Aaron Davis. In addition to the committee members the trial was facilitated through the efforts of many other Rocky Mountain Vizsla Club members and help from VCA members in attendance from around the nation.

The judges for the Open Puppy were Eric Cook and Mark Keegan. These gentlemen are local Coloradans from other breed clubs. They are well respected in the area both as judges and as competitors. Alan Davison of Dogs Unlimited served as their Judge's Marshal. Sabrina Corliss, a RMVC member planted birds for this stake which was the lead off stake on the roster.

Winners of the Open Puppy were:

  • 1st place: Mudbone Firestone Laws of Motion owned by Christine Henry and Warren Eizman and handled by Warren.
  • 2nd Place: Crimson's Rowdy Rudy owned and handled by Steve Merbach.
  • 3rd Place: VK's 20 Gauge Gunnar owned by Hunter VanKooten and handled by Steve Chang.
  • 4th Place: Red River's Jamball Eve of Destruction JH owned by Joe & Amy Ball and Holly Hatfield and handled by Holly.
  • Judges Award of Merit: Crimson's Double Twenty Gauge owned by Mark & Pam Spurgeon and handled by Mark.

Of interest regarding the Puppy placements, four of the five (2nd thru jam) were sired by the same dog, 3xNGDC 2xNAFC NFC DC AFC Crimson's Twenty Gauge Ruger SH CGC. The second place winner and the JAM are littermates.

Judges for the NGDC were Ray Calkins of Oregon and Cindy Findley from Iowa. Ray is known throughout the country as a tough competitor with his line of German Wirehaired Pointers which have won several National titles. He has judged countless trials, many of them National Championships for all of the pointing breeds. Ray is a knowledgeable, fair and attentive judge. Cindy Findley is fast becoming known as an enthusiastic and positive judge. She has been active with hunting dogs most of her life and has been involved with pointing dog field trials since 2000. She has won National Championships with her English and Gordon Setters which she trains herself. These two fine people added much to this event with their outgoing personalities and sense of humor, not to mention their bird dog knowledge. Mark Keegan served as their Judge's Marshal and he did an excellent job.

A classy touch to this event was a grand preliminary to the NGDC, the professional singing of the Star Spangled banner while the trial's participants gathered around the flagpole on Saturday morning. The anthem was followed by the judges' expectations as far as scouting and retrieving were concerned. With the opening ceremony complete the breakaway was set for 9 am.
