Pointing Breed Field Trials
Tarheel Brittany Club Field Trial

It was snow in the Sandhills. The Tarheel Brittany Club held their field trial from January 8-11, and we were able to see the dogs run through the snow on Friday. The event was held at the Robert J. Gordon Field Trial Area within the Sandhills Game Lands, Hoffman, North Carolina.

Thomas Tighe, Chairman of the Field Trial Committee, was busy getting the horses ready at 7:30am, and the dog wagon was going around picking up dogs. Everyone was getting ready for the Open All-Age Stake, which was run from 8am till noon. There was not much snow coming down during the first brace, but it picked up later.

The snow didn't make it easy for the dogs to find a covey of birds and only a few were found this morning. After the fourth brace everyone took a coffee break and tried to warm up. Some of the horses even started eating the hay used in the dog wagon to keep the dogs warm.

Everyone participating had a comment on the diverse wildlife in the game lands. Someone saw several wild turkey last week, fox squirrels live here and there are plenty of deer. One of the more unique inhabitants is one that has been designated an endangered species. The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker nests in the game lands and we could easily spot a nesting tree. They had two white circles painted at the base of a tree. This bird requires a living pine tree for its nesting cavity, which can take more than a year to complete.

Despite the weather, everyone had a good time during the trial. Back at the clubhouse, Judy Tighe, Field Trial Secretary, had prepared a wonderful lunch for the participants. That warmed people up just enough for the next stake.
