Irish Setter Club of America National Walking Trial and Hunt Test

By Bonnie Hidalgo

The Irish Setter Club of America held its annual Walking event at Cloverdale Farm near Sutherlin, VA on April 2-4, 2010. Cloverdale Farm is a popular venue with its excellent facilities and good running grounds. Fred Leggett can be very proud of his farm, although the fields were wet from recent rains and from the Dan River overflowing its banks it was still a great place for a field trial.

Nina Johnson is the National Chairperson for this event; Kevin Culver served as the local Chairman. Sandy Jones did a great job as event Secretary. Karolynne McAteer, Susan Sullivan and Jerry Threadgill rounded out the committee but much help was also received from many of the ISCA members. The ISCA event kicked off on April 2 with the ISCA Walking Championship. This event is not recognized as a Championship by AKC but winners are credited with points as though it were a regular Gun Dog stake. The ISCA is working toward AKC National Championship status for this stake as a Walking Gun Dog Championship. The ISCA must demonstrate that there is adequate support with good numbers of properly qualified dogs. This year’s entry was seen as an improvement in those areas.

The Winner of the ISCA Walking Gun Dog Championship was Lynturk's Runnymeade Ranger, owned by Teresa Sanford & Kevin Culver. Ranger was handled by Kevin Culver. Second place in the Championship went to Karrycourt's Cactus Cidor owned and handled by Brian Wagner. Third and Fourth Placements were withheld due to lack of Championship caliber performance.

An Irish Setter Club of America Hunt Test was held on Saturday. There were two entries in the Master Hunt Test, one in the Senior level and seventeen entered in the Junior test level. One Master Hunter and one Senior Hunter received qualifying scores. In the Junior Test level there were ten dogs that received qualifying legs.
