Non-Retrieving Stake: Day 4
We are once again blessed with the wonderful weather that is spring in Virginia. This morning was cool again but this morning a 10 MPH breeze made the temperature seem much lower than the 45 degrees that the thermometer read. The wind would subside before the noon hour making another repeat of the bluebird days we have enjoyed. It might be interesting to note that today the wind was out of the east. I will not try to say it effected the day but today did feature much less bird work. Many of the dogs did not seem on their “A Game” today. A great number of non productives were recorded for dogs that normally have sure noses. Maybe it was the east wind or the cool front that came through even though it did not cool the temperature greatly. We expect a change of weather to cool with showers, possibly that had an effect. We hope that the change will have a positive effect on the dogs.
We were honored again today by a number of AKC employees from the Raleigh office. Six people were present from the IT department and the Performance Events department. It was a great opportunity for them to witness and learn about one of the dog games that their efforts support.
Brace 22) NAFC CH Ariels Justa Gotta GO Now “Louie” GWP, handler Dave Pomfert
Axel’s Bleu Bayou of Reiteraim JH “Bleu” Weimaraner, handler Mike Mullineaux
Louie had a good quality find at eight minutes but was picked up at forty four minutes when his handler felt he was not challenging. Bleu recorded two find and a non productive. He ran in a workmanlike fashion. He hunted hard and finished the hour.
FC Brook’s little Pete “Opie” Brittany, handler Jim Carter
Maggie carded a non productive at 13 minutes. She had no finds when at forty five her handler, knowing that she was not challenging today, pick her up. Opie was running a snapping gun dog race. He found game at sixteen minutes in the field after the creek crossing. His bird flushed back over his head having a negative impact on his day.
Brace 24) Wingfield’s Annie Oakley “Annie” GSP, handler Dave Walker
FC Ike’s Eshod Delight “Dee” GSP, handler Ray Dohse
Annie was a powerful dog. She had a find on off game at fifteen and had trouble pinning game at twenty four minutes, the result was she was put on a rope. Dee had a good find at ten minutes, backed her brace mate at fifteen, and performed a difficult relocation at forty four minutes. She ran the hour making several memorable casts and finishing well.
Brace 25) GC Suzie B VD Esserburg “Suzie” GSP, handler Jim Heckert
DC Britt Haven’s Blaze of Glory “Blaze” handler John Perry
This was a pair of strong running gundogs. They would be victims of the unusual conditions and had both recorded two non productives by the thirty minute mark and were both done.
Brace 26) Diamond Hill Dancer “Luke” Brittany, handler Sebastian Ventura
CH O’Charida Kist Mi’s Stony River SH “River” GSP, handler Jim Heckert
Luke ran a good gundog race. He recorded a stop to flush at 6 minutes, a non productive at twenty eight minutes, and another non productive near time. He did finish the hour with gas left in the tank. River had on the running shoes. Unfortunately he took the wrong turn and was counted out by thirty minutes.
Brace 27) NGDC FC Covey Up Johnny “John” Pointer, handler Jim Heckert
Bill’s Last Chance “Luke” English Setter, handler Dave Pomfert
John, a past winner of this event, took the wrong turn early. After being missing for about 10 minutes, his handler went to recover his fine charge. Luke is the kind of setter that catches your eye both running and especially on his game. He had a non productive in a fence line that was heavily covered with trees, vines and tall grasses. The bird was most likely there but was not going to flush. At eighteen he had a good find, and a find on a dead bird at twenty five minutes. He was doing a very nice job when at forty five minutes this young stylist committed an error on his game and was done.
Brace 28) Voglemeister’s Out On Bail JH “Bailey” GSP, handler Dave Walker
NAGDC FC AFC QC’s Prime Suspect “Sage” GSP, handler Bill Monk
Bailey had a hard time getting on track. After giving him ample time to loosen up his handler thought it best to call it a day. Sage ran an intelligent gundog race, covering the likely bird haunts. He carded solid finds at eighteen, forty-five, and at forty-eight minutes. He looked good on his game and his manners were top shelf. He finished his time forward.
