Non-Retrieving Stake: Day One
Spring time in Virginia can bring beautiful weather, which we continued to enjoy. Overnight the temperatures had fallen to below freezing, leaving ice on the dog bowls. Once again we were blessed with winds that would only rise to 5-10 MPH. Clear skies were the order of the day.
The course used for this stake uses the same opening and middle section that was run for the retrieving event. There has been several fields added to the turn around area, and extension of the final fields to achieve one hour. The course flows well, helping the dogs find their way. There are lines of trees and grassy understory on both sides of most of the fields The turn around area features a section that is heavily wooded that will test the dogs ability to stay in touch with it’s handler.
The goal for this event has been set at seven braces a day. Due to the number of entries in this event this report will be limited in the description of each performance. Highlights of each competitor will be included.
Brace 1) FC Snips Midwest Maverick MH “Maverick”, GSP, handler: Ray Dohse
Alpenblick’s Southern Bell “Bell” GSP, handler: Matthew Bazilone
This pair had their running shoes on. Bell was gone from the break away and not returned. Maverick’s handler also called for the tracker at eighteen minutes.
Brace 2) AFC Palm Glades Mr. Spock “Mr Spock” GSP, handler: Tim Smelcer
FC AFC NFC NAFC Iskote Ani Mosh “Fred” IS, handler: Steve Bailey
Fred was gone soon after the start and at seventeen minutes his handler admitted he had too much dog today and asked for his tracker. Mr. Spock had a find at six minutes that required relocation on moving birds, a very nice find at twenty three minutes, and then ran into trouble on his third find, ending the brace.
Brace 3) NGDC FC AFC Hit’s For Pete’s Sake “Pete” Brittany, handler:Judy Kiracofe
NAGDC FC AFC Prairies Edge Tippy “Tippy”, handler: Pat Vande Hei

Brace 4) DC AFC Bitteroot Semper Fi Cutter “Cutter” Vizsla, handler: Clint Sails
CH Up N’ Adam’s Cherokee Firewater JH “Bud” GSP, handler: Matthew Basilone
Bud carded and find and a back. After this point he was not responding like his handler wish and he was put in harness. Cutter did a nice job of running the lines. He would record one find early on off game, a natural back, and two finds with eye catching style. He finished at the same spped he started.
Brace 5) Just a Puff of Smoke “Smoke” Brittany, handler: Ben Lorenson
NFC FC Frank N Stein “Frankie” Pointer, handler Bridget Bailey
This nice pair of bird dogs put down a pleasing hour. Smoke carded three finds where her wonderful style was clearly on display. She was always forward and had an easy handle. Frankie would have two finds and a nonproductive. He seemed to get stronger as his hour progressed.
