English Setter Association of America National Field Trial 2010

The 2010 English Setter Nationals were held at Rocky Mountain Roosters Hunt Club near Calhan, CO on April 13-16. The grounds were adequate to host the 45 minute National and National Amateur Championship stakes and the accompanying half hour Open Derby Classic. The varying terrain created objectives to hunt as did the scattered trees and brush. As the name implies there were plenty of pheasants on course; additionally quail were planted in likely cover.

Maxine "Biz" Chanin chaired the event and was aided by a hard working committee that consisted of Tracy Haines as Secretary and fellow committee members Ben Garcia, Ken Rawlings, Mark Keegan, Donna Jordan and Roy Smith. These people covered jobs such as Marshal, dog wagon driver, bird planters, and raffle.

The event began on Tuesday April 13 with the National Championship. The start was delayed by strong winds and only two braces of the twelve drawn were run. The remaining braces were completed on Wednesday, with a scratch bringing the total number of starters to 22.

Judges for the National Championship were David Suitts of Hudson, CO and Ed Dixon of Norco, CA. These gentlemen have vast experience in handling and judging fine bird dogs. David comes from the world of the All Age Pointer, having owned and handled multiple Champions. He has judged Championships all across this nation. Ed has enjoyed great success with Brittanys and Pointers, winning Championship stakes and finishing field Champions. He is a respected and sought after judge.

The judges chose for their winners, dogs that hunted the country intelligently with class and handled their birds stylishly and cleanly.

Nauvoo Valley Cash Money won the 2010 title of English Setter National Champion. Cash is owned by Landon Beard of Eagle Mountain, UT and she was handled to the victory by Ben Garcia.

Runner-up to the Champion is FC Paz’s Dakota Frostbite owned by Fred Paz of Thornton, CO. She was handled by Ben Garcia.

FC Jaydog’s Wonder Boy placed third. He was handled by R.J. Marquardt for owners Clem and Marilynne Little of Enumclaw, WA.

In fourth place was FC/AFC Riley’s Runnin’ Hideaway MH owned by Ben and Amanda Garcia of Peyton, CO and handled by Ben.

There were two dogs that received the Judges’ Award of Merit. They were FC/AFC Trinity’s Razzle Dazzle owned by Wayne and Trish James of Seale, AL with Wayne as handler and Chukarhill Rimrock Ridge owned and handled by Cindy Findley of Ventura, IA.

The Open Derby Classic judges were Cindy Findley of Ventura, IA and Jeff Hoskins of Parker, CO. They are knowledgeable, well respected judges. The Derby drew eleven entries but was reduced by a scratch to ten starters; it ran in its entirety on Thursday morning, April 15.

The two top placing entries appeared in the third brace. Too Fool’s Chukarhill Pearl was awarded first for owner and handler, Trena Cardwell. Second place went to Streek’s Little Maggie owned by Donna Gibbons Markey of Bulverde, TX and handled by Ben Garcia.

In third place was Tomar’s Glenhaven Mirage owned by Anne Boyd of Browns Valley, CA and handled by Trena Cardwell.

Pointto’s Up Shot owned by Joe and Janeen Schneider placed fourth. Up Shot was handled by Joe Schneider.

The English Setter National Amateur Championship began on Thursday afternoon and completed late the following day. Judges for this important stake were Mike Aldrich of Nogal, NM and Ellis Herz of Sherman Oaks, CA. Mike has owned and handled German Shorthaired Pointers to National titles and has judged prestigious Championships for many breeds across this country. Ellis is known for great success with Vizslas as well as German Wirehaired Pointers. He is a sought after judge and has judged National Championships for several breeds.

Chukarhill Rimrock Ridge put on a fantastic display to gain the title of English Setter National Amateur Champion of 2010 for proud owner and handler, Cindy Findley of Ventura, IA.

Runner-up to the Champion was FC Stirling’s Five Star General JH owned by George and Amy Lutz of Stanwood, WA and handled by George.

FC/AFC Riley’s Runnin’ Hideaway was third for handler Tracy Haines. Riley is owned by Ben and Amanda Garcia of Peyton, CO.

In fourth place was 2xNFC/FC/AFC Tomar’s Chukarhill Frost owned and handled by Anne Boyd of Browns Valley, CA.

The 2011 English Setter Association of America National Championship will be held in the spring of 2011 at the Andersen Ranch, Sunnyside, WA.
