Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Club Field Trials
Farmerville, LA - Home of exceptional Dachshund field trials and fine Italian cuisine! Say what?On February 7 and 8, the Morehouse Beagle Club was the site for the Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Club and Dachshund Club of America Region III field trials. On Saturday there was an entry of 97 and on Sunday 91 Dachshunds took to the field. Amazing entries but even more amazing was how well organized the Committee members and Marshalls were.
They started roll call both days promptly at 7am. And within 15 minutes of completing the bracings, two stakes were in the field. The Marshalls and clubhouse were equipped with 2-way radios. This enabled the many exhibitors with entries in multiple stakes to be prepared and find handlers for their dogs, if needed. It also enabled both stakes and the clubhouse to keep tabs on the second and subsequent series in each stake. While keeping communications flowing, the Marshalls worked the areas efficiently and kept the bunnies coming one after another. The stakes moved smoothly and, on Saturday, we broke for a lunch of chicken soup, salads and sandwiches. A perfect lunch after a chilly morning in the field. Sunday's lunch was a beef barley soup, with salads and sandwiches. And for those so inclined, there was always a table of desserts ranging from cookies to brownies with mint centers.

Speaking of food Italian cuisine? Saturday night there was a free meal for all that were present. Wendy and her kitchen staff of Nancy Barkley and Cindi Todd laid out an Italian buffet of three cheese ravioli, spinach tortellini, and Italian sausage tortellini. There was your choice of homemade, VERY rich Alfredo sauce or a lucious, homemade tomato sauce. The main course was complemented by fresh salads and rolls. For dessert, there was the ever present dessert table, or FOUR kinds of cheese cakes! The club donated the cost of each meal to Rescue. Organized AND generous, Dallas Fort Worth Dachshund club is truly amazing.
After lunch each day the final two stakes were run and it came down to the final four. The OAAB and OAAD winners ran off for Best of Open. And the FC Bitch and FC Dog winners ran for Best of FCs. The winners of those two bracings ran for Absolute.
There were new FCs each day, including the Absolute winner of Saturday. New FC Laci's Eureka Maru MW (Maru), owned by Rod Barkley and Cindi Todd, had finished first on Saturday and Sunday the previous weekend. So this third win topped by an Absolute win is a tribute to an impressive little mini wire.
There were a lot of impressive dogs, for various reasons:
- Buddy, the 14½ year old standard wire running in the OAAD stake and placed fourth on Saturday,
- Dutchess, the red smooth, who won OAAB for her novice owner on Sunday,
- Lolly, a standard wire FC, who won the FC Bitch stake and Best of FCs on Saturday for her junior handler, Scott Gohlke.
- Amy, the little mini smooth piebald, who took third on Saturday to finish her FC. The first for her owner, Gloria LaTour.
