Dachshund Field Trials

Bayou Dachshund Club of New Orleans

Bayou Dachshund Club of New Orleans Field Trial

January 3 & 4, 2009 – by Randy David

Due to circumstances beyond the club’s control, it was necessary that Bayou secure alternate grounds for its January Field Trial. Bayou members began a quick search for alternative grounds in Louisiana, but were not successful. The outlook for securing an alternative field trial grounds was beginning to look bleak. Thanks in large part to Houston Dachshund Club who helped Bayou secure the Baker Farm in Sealy, Texas, Bayou moved its Field Trial to Sealy, Texas. Everyone was determined to make this weekend a super success. Who would have thought that with all things considered, this field trial would turn out to be one of the best field trials for Bayou Dachshund Club of New Orleans? The entries for both days, Saturday and Sunday, were the largest in Bayou’s history.

The weather was expected to provide us with a stormy Friday evening and then was to clear by noon on Saturday. We missed the rain, but Saturday we were in the field with hot and humid 80 degree weather and on Sunday, the temperature went from 80 to 50 and windy in a flash of a rabbit looking for cover.

Friday night featured Bayou’s second annual Swamp Rabbit cook off. Participants were encouraged to bring a dish that was prepared by them. Those who were not inclined to participate in the cook off sampled the dishes and voted for their favorites. Everyone at dinner voted for up to five of their favorite dishes. The winners, from 1st place to 5th were presented true chef medallions with the Bayou Swamp Rabbit logo emblazoned on the medallion with ribbons of blue, red, yellow, white and green. The first place winner was Elizabeth Ellis for her “Swamp Rabbit Dirty Water” (Chicken and sausage gumbo; 2nd place Ashley Dumas for her “Swamp Rabbit Caviar Cheesecake” (Chocolate Crunch Cheesecake); 3rd place went to Ken Hagmueller for his “Swamp Rabbit Gets His Veggies” (Vegetable Medley); 4th went to Randy David for his “Swamp Rabbit Fluffy Delight” (White Chocolate Delight); 5th place went to Janet Schwalbe for her “Swamp Rabbit Hash” (Best Chicken Casserole).

This weekend produced two new Dual Champions: CH V Schwalbes Red Hot Boudin MS owned by Robert and Janet Schwalbe of Pendergrass, Georgia and CH V Schaafmeister’s Infinite Justice NA NAJ NJP, owned by CM & WS Shaffmaster of Red Oak, Texas, and two new Field Champions: Jalyse’s Additional Run ML owned by Jamie Sexton of Fayetteville, Tennessee and Hidden Cedars Hippie Chick MLP owned by Rick and Jane Schwarz of Plano, Texas. Bayou Dachshund Club of New Orleans, Inc., Congratulates the new Dual Champions and Field Champions.

After the Saturday awards, Bayou featured a Mardi Gras parade using the rented golf carts as the floats. Bayou added a surprise feature to the parade by announcing the nomination of King Bayou Tally-ho I, “Bentley”, DC Dynadaux That's My Style MS, CD, ME, CGC, CG, VC, owned by Larry and Paula Innis of Dallas, Texas and Queen Bayou Tally-ho I, “Maggie”, DC Phantom’s Masquarade owned by Chris and Patricia Mims of Richmond, Texas. The King and Queen each wore matching crowns adorned with purple and gold beads and sequins, as well as plush deep purple velvet capes.

When asked if she was surprised at her Dachshund Bentley being nominated Bayou King Tally-ho I Paula Innis said, “Bentley is one happy dog with this nomination and we always knew in our hearts he was a King and now this proves it.”

Patricia Mims said “My Maggie will do her royal best to represent Bayou Dachshund Club of New Orleans in the coming year and is up to the challenge.”

The Grand Marshal, “Cyan”, DC Mye Primadox Shambala CD, RE, CGC, TDI, owned by Sandi Myers and Ken Hagmueller of Waxahachie, Texas escorted the King and Queen and presented them to Lord and Lady Owen of Baker Farm. The Grand Marshal wore a stunning top hat trimmed with gold, green and purple glitter; the mask was ornately decorated with brilliant sequins and the cape was a short vest trimmed with purple feathers. When asked how difficult it was to get a Dachshund to wear a costume, Sandi Myers responded with a laughing, “He will wear anything for cookies.”

There was even a bit of musical entertainment as David Ennis and Kellie Balduf, of Dallas, Texas, played the mandolin and sang for the revelers. David has been playing the mandolin for thirteen years and plays and sings for the Vocal Majority Chorus.

Bayou Dachshund Club of New Orleans extends a sincere thank you to all those who attended our field trial, the judges, the Field Marshals, the field trial committee, Owen and Elaine Baker and the members of Houston Dachshund Club for helping Bayou make history while facing adversity.
