Beagle Field Trials

Mid-Kentucky Beagle Club

January 22-25, 2009 – Berea, KY

The hills of Eastern Kentucky held the remains of a six inch snow as the gathering of the Mid-KY Beagle Club took place to begin its annual AKC Licensed Small Pack Option Beagle Field Trial. The event was held at the beautiful Central Kentucky Wildlife Management Area near Berea, KY. It was a cold January morning as the 25 hounds in the thirteen inch bitch class went to the field under the watchful eyes of Judges Don Goforth and Bryan Bush. The judges and field marshal were mounted on excellent gaited field trial horses. In short order the silence was shattered by the screaming of the first pack of beagles in hot pursuit of an eastern cottontail. Followed shortly by the thunder roar of gunfire rang out as masterful field marshal Larry Campbell fired a blank .32 caliber cartridge to test the hounds for gun shyness. It was a hard driving race and many more similar races would be witnessed throughout the day by the gallery.

By 2:00 P.M. the class had been reduced to two packs to run in second series. The hound work improved as the lower scoring hounds were eliminated. The second series running was much improved over first series. By 4:00 P.M. the judges were ready for the winners pack measuring. Following measuring the winners pack returned to the field. These little girls put on a show for about an hour and a half. One rabbit was pursued so relentlessly that it holed. And another rabbit was up and running in short order. Finally by 5:30 P.M. the winner was declared and that would be Jugger Knots Jenny and the proud owner is Tim Rudder.

It was a nice event enjoyed by all in attendance.
