We hope that you are having a safe and successful summer of shows. Understanding the rules, regulations, and policies of the AKC will help clubs in planning and holding their events. In an effort to help clubs be successful, we have Frequently Asked Question page within the Conformation section of our website. You will find information about moving dogs from classes after closing, listing trophies/prizes/awards in a premium list, and many other topics. Changes to Rules Applying to Dog Shows
Chapter 11, Section 3; Effective: Immediately
Judges of the 4-6 Month Beginner Puppy competition can judge and exhibit on the same day.
Chapter 16, Section 1; Effective: January 1, 2013
This rule change provides Parent Clubs the option to have Reserve Winners Dog and Reserve Winners Bitch awarded a 3-point major at the National Specialty provided the number of dogs competing in the regular classes of the Reserve Winner's sex totals at least twice the number required for a 5-point major, in the region in which the event is held.
AKC National Owner-Handled Series (NOHS) Update
Beginning with the 2014 qualifying period (October 10, 2013) the National Owner-Handled Series competition may be offered at any independent Conformation event (All-Breed, Group or Specialty). For more information please visit the NOHS page.
Standing Approval for Specific Special Attractions
At the July 2013 meeting of the AKC Board of Directors the Board granted standing written approval for specific Special Attractions for events occurring on or after January 1, 2014. We are in the process of updating the Special Attractions Application to reflect the changes. This change in policy will make the process of offering and managing Special Attractions much easier for the clubs.
At the July 2013 meeting of the AKC Board of Directors the Board amended their policy regarding the use of combined catalogs. The Catalog Sales portion of the AKC Board Policy Manual has been modified to reflect the change in policy. This policy change will benefit clubs and exhibitors by expanding the use of combined catalogs.
September 28-29, 2013 -- AKC National Tracking Invitational
The 2013 AKC National Tracking Invitational (NTI) will be held at the Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest in Clermont, Kentucky on September 28-29, 2013. For more information about the event, please click here.
Effective January 1, 2014 -- New Tracking Dog Urban Test
AKC licensed/member clubs eligible to hold TD Tracking Tests will be allowed to apply to hold the new Tracking Dog Urban (TDU) Optional Tracking Test. This test is designed to make tracking more accessible to clubs and exhibitors in an urban setting. If your club is approved to hold tracking events of any kind it is eligible to hold the TDU test. Judges eligible to judge TD events will also be eligible to judge TDU events. TDU events will be approved to be held on or after January 1, 2014 and clubs may begin applying for the TDU events after August 1, 2013.
The fundamental features of the Tracking Dog Urban (TDU) Test are the dog's ability to follow a track laid by a person under a variety of scenting conditions in an urban environment and to find the articles dropped by that person. This is an optional titling event. Clubs are not required to offer this test and dogs are not required to earn the title to enter a TD, TDX or VST tracking test. Effective January 1, 2014 -- AKC Canine Partners℠ Listed Dogs Eligible to Compete in AKC Tracking Events
Effective January 1, 2014, mixed-breed dogs listed with the AKC Canine Partners Program℠ will be eligible to compete in AKC Tracking Tests. Beginning August 1, 2013, clubs may submit an application for an all-breed Tracking Test and may offer competition for mixed-breed dogs listed with the AKC Canine Partners℠Program at the club's option for any Tracking Tests held on or after January 1, 2014.

Effective January 1, 2014 -- New Event Application Fees
The AKC Rally®, Obedience, Tracking and Agility event application fees have been changed effective for events held on or after January 1, 2014 as follows:
- AKC Rally trials with over 30 entries (based on the previous year's corresponding trial) will have a $50.00 event application fee (a reduction from the current $100.00 application fee).
- Regardless of the number of entries in the previous year's corresponding trial, a minimum event application fee will be charged for the competitions listed below. The minimum event application fee will be $25 for all competitions except for standalone Obedience Trials held by member clubs ($15).

- Standalone Obedience Trials
- Tracking Tests
- Agility Trials
Grooming Plan Requirements When Offering Reserved Grooming
As per the AKC Board Policy from July 2012, if a club is offering reserved grooming they must also, at no charge, offer a "a reasonable amount of grooming/crating space of equal desirability to the exhibitors". If a club plans on offering reserved grooming, a grooming plan should be submitted with the event application. The grooming plan should include information about what percentage of grooming is planned to be reserved vs. free as well as a physical description (flooring, cover, location, etc.) of the free and reserved grooming.
Judging Assignments and Contracts
It is the responsibility of the clubs to have letters or contracts with judges prior to submitting a judge's panel. The letters/contracts should be for the specific assignments for the judge. As part of the contract process, the club should also confirm with the judges any Special Attractions that the club may want them to judge. There have been several issues recently due to a lack of communication regarding the expectations of the club.
