Summer has kept everyone busy planning events, showing dogs, and staying cool! Event Operations launched three new competitions in July 2012 -- AKC National Owner Handler Series, 4 to 6 Month Beginner Puppy Competitions, and Open Shows. Clubs and exhibitors are excited to participate in these new competitions and we are excited to see them take off!
This issue of the Event Committee Bulletin is full of helpful information including an update from Companion Events, a request from Judging Operations, and new Board policy information. Of course you can also find numerous rule and regulation changes, seminar listings, friendly reminders and frequently asked questions.

Companion Events Updates
Impacts Obedience, Rally, Tracking and Agility events.
Effective January 1, 2013
FSS breed clubs with an AKC recognized parent club may hold AKC Companion Events. The club must demonstrate an active membership with the knowledge and resources to hold the event for which they are applying. The club would be required to follow the procedures as outlined for any club prior to being approved to hold a licensed trial. The competition type for each licensed event would be an all-breed event to be held at the club's specialty shows only.
How to Proceed With Cancelling an AKC Licensed Event
One of the most important decisions for a club is whether or not to cancel an event at the last minute when facing factors beyond its control -- such as a natural disaster or extreme weather -- that might affect the safety, health and welfare of the dogs, exhibitors, judges, club members and spectators.
Rule Changes Applying to Dog Shows
Chapter 2, Section 4; Effective: January 1, 2012
Applications for Conformation and Obedience events must be received by the American Kennel Club at least EIGHTEEN weeks before the closing date for entries of the event. This rule changes the submission deadline from twenty-four weeks to eighteen weeks to coincide with the deadline for the judges panel.
The Judging Operations Department is currently seeking events that may be interested in hosting an upcoming AKC Institute for Aspiring and Newly Approved Judges (BASIC) and/or an AKC Advanced Judging Institutes. The hosting of a judges education seminar can be included as a major activity on your Statement of Compliance with AKC Policies governing the Approval of Dog Shows.
Grooming Space Policy (July 2012 Board Meeting)
Effective January 1, 2013
It is the policy of the AKC to encourage and welcome all exhibitors. Keeping the cost of participating in the Sport reasonable for current as well as potential new competitors is crucial to its future health and growth. At the same time, the Board recognizes the financial pressure faced by many clubs in putting on their events. The Board has therefore established the following policy, effective January 1, 2013, with regards to grooming space.
In the rush to complete event registrations, submit applications, judging panels, and show results, or deal with the multitude of issues that are involved with hosting an event, it is easy to forget a few things. Below are some friendly reminders regarding some common misunderstandings or misconceptions that the Event Operations department sees on a regular basis.
- When using Online Plans, be sure to check the box indicating your club will have a Disaster & Emergency Plan onsite.
- The abbreviated membership list (name, phone number, zip code, and email address) is only applicable if the list is uploaded to the website. A club that physically sends their membership list to AKC must provide full contact (name, street address, phone number, and email address).
- The AKC National Owner Handler Series can be added to any All-Breed event by completing a Special Attraction application.
- Any club offering a conformation event can include the 4-6 Month Beginner Puppy competition by completing pages 2 and 6 of the Event Application.

Questions & Answers
Who can use OCMS?
The Online Competition Maintenance System (OCMS) allows clubs to manage the information for Open Show Conformation, Specialty, Parent Club Specialty, Junior Showmanship, and Sweepstake events.
Can my club submit results for our Open Show online?
Clubs hosting an Open Show should submit their results electronically using OCMS. Clubs must still submit their judges books, catalog (or entry forms), show report, and fees via mail. These items must be submitted (electronically and via mail) and received by our office within seven (7) days of the event.
