Central Iowa Dachshund Club Hosts Its First Earthdog Tests
November 3-4, 2007 - Earlham, Iowa

By Barbara Teigen, AKC Field Representative

While there have been Earthdog tests held for some years at the home of Barbara and Larry LeTourneau in Earlham, Iowa, these were the first for the newly licensed Central Iowa Dachshund Club. Barbara promised perhaps the last nice weekend of the fall for these tests, and she was right. While chilly in the mornings, things warmed up on this lovely site of 25 acres complete with pond, creek, ravine, draws, pastures and fields.

There were very nice master class entries with 15 on Saturday and 17 on Sunday. Both master class walk-ups were challenging and interesting for the dogs. Judges Duane Pulford and Susan Chapman got to see some great work from quite a few of the master dogs. Intro classes ran concurrent with the master classes in the mornings. Both days, morning judging was complete in time for a hot lunch break.

In the afternoons, junior and senior classes ran simultaneously. Both days, the event ended around 3 p.m. On Saturday, after the test, Pam Giles (CIDC member and AKC Earthdog judge) ran a practice session for about 20 dogs whose owners chose to stay and get some extra work in.

The club held specialty/obedience/rally events earlier this fall and is considering adding field trials as well. CIDC is a great addition to the Dachshund community and the Earthdog community. Congratulations to the club, Event Chair M.A. Klein and Event Secretary Jennifer Dayton on a most successful start in Earthdog events.
