Take Your Dog to Work Day - June 21, 2002
AKC's Canine Good Citizen Test Identified As Standard
On June 21, 2002, Canine Good Citizens will be joining our nation's work force to celebrate the 4th annual Take Your Dog To Work Day. Founded by Pet Sitters International (PSI), the world's largest organization for professional pet sitters, Take Your Dog To Work has thousands of participants across the country.
This year, Pet Sitters International, an educational organization for professional pet sitters, identified the AKC's Canine Good Citizen Program as one standard that can be used for taking dogs into public places. For dogs who are not yet ready to pass the CGC test, Pet Sitters International advocates getting the dogs in CGC classes. Owners of dogs who don't quite have the skills needed to come to the office can participate in Take Your Dog To Work by proudly displaying a picture of the dog in the office.
In the Raleigh AKC offices, the Dogs In The Building Committee, headed by Larry Sorenson and Mari-Beth O'Neill, has developed a program that is being viewed as a model for dogs in corporate settings. All dogs coming to work at the AKC must have passed the CGC Test or have an obedience title, have current vaccines, and have an active flea prevention program. Owners must sign the Responsible Dog Owners Pledge and agree that they will not permit their dogs to infringe on the rights of others. Dogs use a designated elevator and owners carry clean-up bags when dogs are walked.
We know that having a dog present can lower our blood pressure and relieve stress. On June 21, in dog-friendly work settings all across America, corporate canines with Canine Good Citizen skills will participate in TakeYour Dog To Work Day.
