2009 AKC World Agility Team/Team Tryouts
May 1-3, 2009 – Hopkins, Minnesota

Sunday morning began with Master Violinist, Michelle Persian, and her students performing the National Anthem. Placement Points will determine who shall gain the second spot on the Austria World Team within each of the 14”, 18”, and 26” jump heights.
Round 5
The final courses of the competition were designed by World Team Coach, Nancy Gyes with each jump height given a separate, unique experience. Running in reverse Placement Points order from Rounds 1 – 4, the competitors embraced the challenge and gave it their all.

Round 4 small dog course was a jumpers course designed by Diane Craig. The broad jump to the weave poles (7-8) was challenging for the dogs and handlers as well as jump – tunnel sequence (14-15).

Round 4 medium dog course was a jumpers course designed by Diane Craig. The challenges on this course for dogs and handlers alike were the threadle (jumps 7 & 8) which demonstrated the excellent handling skills of the exhibitors in shaping their partner’s path.

The day ended with Round Three's standard class course. This course had lots of twists and turns to test both dog and handler. In the true spirit of agility, camaraderie filled the air. As each team ran all out, the crowd responded by cheering them on enthusiastically.

Round 2
Next up was the fast and challenging Round Two jumpers course. Small dogs ran first followed by medium dogs and then large dogs.
The small and medium dogs ran the same course. This course featured an interesting technical opening on jumps 1-6. The broad jump presented a challenging entry to the weave poles.

Next, the large dogs were faced with a very technically challenging course. Obstacles 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 generated many faults for the dogs. The turn from 2 to 3 and the sequence 5-6-7 were especially challenging.

Round 1
Round 1 competition at the AKC/USA Agility World Team Tryouts started with the large dogs. The action was fast and furious as dogs and handlers negotiated each challenging course. The small and medium dogs finished out Round 1's competition.
Judges for the weekend are: Kurt Matushek (Elgin, IL) and AKC Agility Field Rep, Diane Craig (Duluth, MN).
Round 1:
The large dog course had many difficult handling elements including approach angels and pull-throughs. The jump sequence of 4-5-6-7, and the final obstacle, a spread jump, proved to be the most challenging areas on the course for the dogs.

1st Place: Susan Tovino and Border Collie - Whip

2nd Place: Geri Hernandez and Border Collie - Focus

The fastest small dogs were those able to run a tight line between jumps 2 and 3 followed by the dogwalk and then a very challenging weave pole entrance, which proved to be the most challenging element of this course.

The medium dog course had a very interesting and technical four jump sequence to a tunnel, followed by a spread jump and challenging entrance to the dogwalk. The faults on this course were spread out between obstacles 7-8-9-10 and jumps 15-16-17.

Day One's competition will wrap up this afternoon with Rounds 2 and 3 of the competition. The combined winners from Rounds 1-3 will earn a spot on the 2009 AKC/USA Agility World Team. Those results shall be posted later today.
