2008 AKC National Agility Championship
Saturday, March 29, 2008 - Tulsa, Oklahoma
The 12th annual AKC National Agility Championship started with the exhibitors arriving to freshly groomed rings for the day's competition. The morning's standard course was designed by Judge, Jean Munger.
The Oklahoma agility community, represented by Sharon Clark and Marilyn Beatty presented AKC President Dennis Sprung and AKC Companion Events Assistant Vice President, Curt Curtis each with a specially commissioned painted pony sculpture. They also presented AKC Agility Director, Sharon Anderson with a commemorative dish. After the presentations AKC Agility Field Representative, Rich Mackintosh sang the National Anthem.
Sharon Anderson introduced the six judges for the weekend: Laura English, Don Farage, Kera Holm, Rachel Long, Jean Munger and Pam Sturtz. Then the crowds settled in to watch the top dogs in the country vie for the National Agility Championship title over the next two days.
After the Standard course was completed Judge, Jean Munger found that the start was challenging as the handlers had to decide how to set up to get their dogs into number 1 to begin the course. number 7-10 was a smooth line for many teams as she had planned when designing the course. There were a number of flyoffs from the teeter as the dogs & handlers pushed for speed. She was surprised that from 13-14 how many handlers pulled their dogs off number 14. The closing sequence kept handlers on their toes as the dogs looked to the number 11 off course option. All the of judges commented how much they enjoyed judging this course to start the day, At the completion of the Round 1 the winners are:

Next up for afternoon was the Jumpers with Weaves course designed by Laura English. In reflecting on how the course ran, she found it to be a fast course with subtle challenges for the dog and handler to discern. She enjoyed watching the dogs run from number 7 up to the weave pole entry. The challenge of the day was number 18-20 and was determined by the handlers' decision as they looked to cut some time to get the dogs into the tunnel. Some handlers cut it too short and the dogs would miss number 19 and go straight into the tunnel. Others tried to cross behind number 19 to slice the dog over it and the dogs would drop the bar. The course did turn out to be a fast course as she had hoped. As often happens with fast courses there were many dropped bars in different parts of the course as handlers drove their dogs for more speed.
