Bone Appetit! Recipes from Our Readers

The great American season of overeating is upon us. To keep your dog from being tempted from the various and sundry people treats in your house, why not whip up a customized canine feast for him? Thanks to Your AKC readers for the following recipes:

The Appetizer: Liver Treats

1 lb raw liver
2 eggs
1 1/4 cup oatmeal
1 tsp garlic and herb seasoning (like Mrs. Dash)
3/4 cup cornmeal

Mix first four ingredients in blender. If your blender will take it, add 3/4 cup cornmeal. Otherwise transfer to a bowl and stir in cornmeal by hand. Spread mixture onto large baking sheet and bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cut immediately into 1" squares or smaller. This will make a chewy treat which should be refrigerated. For crunchy treats that can be stored at room temperature, lower the oven temperature and return the baking sheet with the cut squares to the oven until they are completely dry and crisp.

The Main Dish: Meatloaf

1 Tbls unsalted soft butter (not margarine) or 1 Tbls olive oil
1 clove garlic, minced or diced
1 cup bread crumbs
1 diced/chopped carrot
1/2 tsp diced parsley
1/2 cup cottage cheese
1 egg - beaten
1 tsp raw unheated honey (from health food store)
1/2 lb lean ground beef, chicken or turkey

Throw all ingredients in a large bowl and mix together. Form into ball shape and place in glass bread pan. Spread meatball into loaf. Bake at 350° about 15 minutes. Cool and serve - this also freezes well.

Dessert: Banana Oatmeal Cookies

6 cups old fashioned oatmeal (do not use quick oats)
3 cups smashed ripe bananas
1/2 cup applesauce

Mix together and form into heaping teaspoon, soupspoon, or tablespoon size depending on the size of your dog, and place them on either a baking stone or a greased cookie sheet. Bake in a 350° oven until hard and golden brown. Put them on a cooling rack, and when cool, keep them in the refrigerator since these will get moldy if not refrigerated. They can be stored in the freezer, and thawed for use without getting mushy.

Enjoy!
