AKC Welcomes Two New State Federations
Dog federations play a vital role in the success of AKC's legislative
efforts, which is why we are pleased to see the emergence of two new
federations and the reorganization of two others. In Mississippi,
concerned fanciers recently formed the Mississippi Canine Coalition,
while purebred dog owners in New Mexico are in the early stages of
establishing a new statewide organization. In preparing for a new
legislative session, North Carolina dog clubs re-energized their
existing federation and renamed the group Confederacy of
Tailwaggers-North Carolina Federation of Dog Clubs earlier this year.
In a similar light, new officers with the Dog Federation of
Wisconsin are working hard to build the organization back into the
strong voice in government it was just a few years ago.

CALIFORNIA - Following a public hearing on Tuesday, December 14,
members of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors approved a new
animal control ordinance by a vote of four to one. Following strong
opposition to the initial proposal at a hearing in late November, the
Board amended the ordinance by reducing the proposed unaltered animal
license from $100 to $28 for those who are active members of state or
national clubs that participate in conformation, agility, training
and hunting events. Those who operate a ranch or farm on more than
two acres also qualify for the reduced fee.

While most of us were very busy last month celebrating the holidays,
December was fairly quiet on the legislative front. We therefore
bring you a very short January newsletter to keep you abreast of the
few items that did see action. With this abbreviated issue, we also
want to remind you that several states and Congress have already
convened for the 2005 session, and most will be in session by the
second week in January. Please make it one of your New Year's
resolutions to stay active in canine legislation this year!
Regards,
Stephanie P. Lane
