A Haven For Dog Owners
Minnetonka, Minnesota is a suburban town on the outskirts of
Minneapolis. Its residents also say it is one of the best places to
live if you are an animal owner. Fanciers and dog owners often view
animal control and local governments with distrust, as it seems they
are often trying to restrict animal owners in various ways. However,
these relationships do not have to be antagonistic, but rather they
can serve to improve the quality of life for dog owners and the
community as a whole. The policies in Minnetonka and the citizens who
have worked to make Minnetonka such a great place to live can serve
as a model for others to build dog friendly communities.

ARKANSAS - Sen. Jeffress is sponsoring S1104 which grants
immunity from both civil and criminal prosecution to a person who
kills an animal that is stray, abandoned or diseased and may be a
threat to his or her person or property. AKC is concerned that the
bill is vague in defining a stray and does not take into account a
loose owned animal or a hunting dog that has strayed. The bill will
be considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Award-Winning Efforts
The Canine Legislation Department is pleased to announce that
Charlotte McGowan has been named a recipient of the AKC Community
Achievement Award for her diligent work on legislative matters of
interest to the dog fancy. The award recognizes outstanding public
education and legislation efforts of AKC-affiliated clubs,
AKC-recognized federations, and their members. Each honoree receives
a certificate and a $1,000 check payable to the club or federation to
support public education and canine legislation efforts.

In March, I had the pleasure of helping staff the AKC Education Booth
at dog shows in Detroit, MI and Syracuse, NY. These trips give the
Canine Legislation department a unique opportunity to speak to
fanciers and the general dog-owing public about legislation issues
that impact them personally.
