| Pets Have Their Night on Capitol Hill |

Don’t tell “Eddie,”
the well-loved Parson Russell Terrier from the TV show Frazier, that dogs
aren’t allowed in Congress. The famous pooch was a highlight at
this year’s Pet Night Reception on Capitol Hill, where legislators
and staff flocked to have their picture taken with Eddie or with the event’s
other animal celebrity, “Nermal,” the cat from the movie Garfield.
Held in the Canon Caucus Room on September 14th, hundreds of people came
out to the reception, making it one of the most popular of the year.
An annual event, Pet Night
is organized by the Animal Health Institute and co-sponsored by the American
Kennel Club, along with other animal organizations, in celebration of
the animal-human bond. The reception gives AKC and other groups an opportunity
to meet with elected officials and their staff in a casual setting. While
attendees enjoy refreshments and photo-ops with animal celebrities, AKC
representatives get a chance to talk to them about our organization and
our issues, and to remind them of the important role that pets play in
their constituents’ lives.
In addition to their photos
with Eddie and Nermal, those who came to Pet Night took home an added
keepsake—goodie bags full of animal related products, including
a “Responsible Dog Ownership” leash from AKC. The gift will
serve as a constant reminder that the American Kennel Club is the resource
when it comes to canine legislation.
