Make the Pet Promise for AKC RDO Day
Pet Promise StickerThis September, as you celebrate AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day, be sure to encourage attendees at your event to sign the Pet Promise. The AKC Responsible Dog Owner Pet Promise, created to bring the spirit of AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day to life, reminds us that raising a happy and healthy pet is more than just playtime and pampering. Owners must ensure their dogs do not infringe on the rights of others. This includes properly disposing of your dog's waste in all public areas, adhering to local leash laws and training your dog to sit, come when called and to cease barking so to not disturb others.

Print pages of the Pet Promise, and take it to schools and other children’s groups you visit. Invite children to take and sign their own copy of the AKC Responsible Dog Owner Pet Promise to show their commitment to their four-legged friends. AKC has a limited supply stickers available that PECs and Canine Ambassadors may order (limit of 50 please) while supplies last. Give one of these fun, colorful stickers to each child who makes the AKC Responsible Dog Owner Pet Promise. E-mail to order stickers.

Public Education Presentation Encourages Action
As proposals for undesirable legislation continue to emerge across the country, the need for public education grows. That’s what AKC Public Education Director Larry Sorenson told about 120 concerned dog fanciers who gathered for an AKC Public Education presentation at the AKC Parent Club Conference in Atlanta in July.

“All-breed clubs and parent clubs are faced with defending our rights as dog owners,” said George Sexton, AKC delegate for the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States. “The presentation is a forward-looking statement on what we are going to have to change in the way we look at ourselves and how the public looks at us.” Read more.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) is proud to announce the Recipients and Honorable Mentions for the 2007 Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE). Established in 2000, ACE has become a valuable public-outreach program for the AKC as well as a source of pride among the fancy and the dog community.

The recipients in the categories of Exemplary Companion, Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue, Service, and Therapy will each receive engraved silver collar medallions and $1,000 cash awards at a presentation ceremony at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Long Beach, California, on December 1-2, 2007.

As we embark on September, the excitement of AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day is in the air. This month-long celebration involves hundreds of clubs and organizations around the country holding free events filled with fun and engaging activities for every dog owner. We thank you for all your hard work in putting on these events in your communities and wish you much success in celebrating dogs and promoting responsible dog ownership this month. Together we have made AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day a September tradition. Dont forget to let us know about your club members whose work and dedication make your events successful so we may recognize them with a certificate of appreciation.

On Saturday, September 15, AKC will hold flagship events in New York City and Raleigh, N.C. The New York event will be in Madison Square Park at Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street. More than 40 AKC-recognized breeds will be on hand, including rare breeds such as the Cesky Terrier, Swedish Vallhund and Tibetan Mastiff, and AKC Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) testing and discount microchipping will be offered. AKC's Raleigh office will hold a similar event at the N.C. State Fairgrounds. This year AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day is proud to have two national sponsors Invisible Fence Brand and Nature's Recipe.

Once again, Id like to remind you of our new AKC Multi-club Education Matches. Weve posted a manual about this important program on the website. Please take a look at it, and contact me to discuss how to get a match going in your region.
