RDO Day Letter to AKC Clubs

Spring 2007

Dear Dog Lover:
The AKC Communications Department is already busy planning the fifth annual "AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day." We invite and encourage all AKC affiliated clubs and dog-related organizations to take part by holding a community event that publicly promotes responsible dog ownership anytime during the month of September.

An agility demonstration captivates the crowd at a 2006 AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day.
The AKC will be hosting our own events in New York City and Raleigh, NC on Saturday, September 15, 2007. These flagship events will highlight the AKC programs and services that support responsible dog ownership and publicize to news media and the dog loving community that events are being held across the country by organizations such as yours.

Last year, more than 350 dog clubs and organizations hosted events reaching millions of dog lovers and potential pet owners through extensive media coverage. To learn how to sign up, click here.

Those who confirm the details of their event with us by August 1, 2007 will receive a resource-filled packet - including posters, brochures, sample press releases and many more materials that will assist you in putting together a top-notch event. We plan to distribute 500 packets on a first-come, first-served basis. We will only ship packets and list events on our web site for those clubs with event details finalized - including date, time, location and planned activities - by the August 1 deadline. Starting July 1, as we have done each year, we will create a central page on our web site where the public can search for events by state, to find AKC RDO Day events in their area.

Some suggestions to help commemorate AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day include:

Throwing an AKC RDO Day celebration for your entire community may seem like a daunting task. If your club would like additional support celebrating AKC RDO Day, we encourage you to reach out to other clubs or dog related organizations in your area to create a combined event. Best Friend Pet Care, Inc has once again offered to allow AKC clubs to host events at its facilities around the country. Many of these facilities have AKC CGC certified evaluators available for your events. For more information about Best Friends Pet Care, Inc visit their Web site. If you are interested in more information about working with Best Friends Pet Care, Inc, please email

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to interact with the public and gain positive exposure for your club, breed and the AKC.   Your participation will help ensure the program’s success, which continues to gain momentum each year, benefiting dogs and dog owners everywhere!

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments.
