Rally is just a lot of fun. Every dog could do it. I have three dogs and plan on putting Rally titles on each. My dog Wyatt is the second with a RN title and has recently received his first leg towards Rally Advanced. The first time I went through a Rally trial, I walked by a station and got discouraged for a while because I did not qualify. Then I got some Rally signs and started practicing at home and have a wonderful AKC trainer. In Rally Novice your dog is still kept on a lead and you are able to talk to your dog or even pat your legs. The only thing you can’t do in Rally Novice, Advanced or Excellent is touch your dog. You have a chance before the trials begin to walk through the course and ask the judge any questions you want, or to explain a sign if you don’t understand how to do it. It’s just like a big obstacle course you walk through with your dog. When you start in Rally Advanced, it gets a little harder with harder signs and your dog is also off lead the entire time which is more difficult. I got a Rally booklet that explains how to do them step by step. You can take as much time as you want going through all the stations. You can go slow or fast and you can even have a do over if you didn’t do a station right with your dog. You do get timed because if there is a tie score, they use the time as the tie breaker. When you get into Rally Excellent, it’s even harder yet and they do a bunch of fun new stuff. Everything is judged on how well you do the maneuvers with your dog, how many times you may have a do over, to your time completing it. I am excited to finish up the Rally Advanced titles and start work on practice for the Excellent.
