To the Future
by Kathleen Burns
My
name is Katie Burns and I will be entering my senior year at Wittenberg
University. Showing and training Golden Retrievers has been a large
part of my life for the past 12 years. I am an education major and
await my final year in school with excitement and anticipation. This
past year was difficult for me because I had to retire my two dogs
from agility. With that sorrow also came great joy when they both
completed my lifelong goals for them. I didn’t realize how much
I would miss training my dogs. I looked on at friends and family actively
showing and my heart ached for a new dog to train. However, I know
that this is not the right time to start a career with a new dog.
My senior year will be crazy and I would not be able to give it the
attention it deserves. My parents have taught me the importance of
being a responsible dog owner. I look forward to the next year of
finding my next dog and getting prepared to train it. I am borrowing
one of my instructor’s dogs to train this summer so that I can
keep my handling skills up to speed. This will bring new and interesting
challenges that I have not experienced.
Being a junior in the American Kennel Club has brought me countless
positive experiences. It has helped me become the woman that I am
proud to be. I hope to get some of my future students involved with
AKC and training their dogs. And while I am on a slight pause from
the show ring, I know that I will come back smarter and stronger than
ever before. I can’t thank AKC enough for all that it has done
for me and I hope to repay this association in the future.
