$1,000 Presented to AKC Affiliated Clubs Hosting Exceptional AKC RDO Day Events
AKC Responsible Dog Ownership DaysThe fourth quarter Community Achievement Awards will solely honor AKC clubs holding exceptional AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day (AKC RDO Day) events in September 2011. AKC RDO Days aim to educate first-time dog owners about the responsibilities of dog ownership and help current owners enhance their relationships with their pets.

For the fourth quarter only, any AKC-affiliated clubs, AKC-recognized federations and their members who host an AKC RDO Day event in their community are eligible for nomination. In order to qualify for the award, the club must hold its event in the month of September. Nominations for the AKC Community Achievement Awards are accepted year-round, however, due to the fact that the 4th quarter awards are dedicated solely to AKC RDO Days, nominations for RDO Day events will not be accepted for consideration for the three remaining quarters. Up to three honorees are named each quarter. Award recipients will receive a certificate and a check for $1,000 payable to the club or federation's public education and canine legislation efforts.

Read about last year's winners here. Learn more about the AKC Community Achievement awards and the nominating process here.

Host an AKC CAR Microchip Clinic
AKC RDO DaysPerfect for your Responsible Dog Ownership Day event, microchipping offers local pet owners the permanent pet identification they need and provides you the opportunity to further promote the good works of your organization. AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR) makes hosting a microchipping clinic easier than ever. Read more about hosting an AKC CAR microchip clinic here .

For further details about hosting a clinic or to obtain microchips, please contact AKC CAR's Joyce Prapuolenis at 800-252-7894 (toll-free), 919-816-3808 or jxp2@akccar.org.

Get Juniors Involved in Your AKC RDO Day
Consider adding a table or designated space to highlight the participation of Juniors in all AKC Events.  Ask a Junior member of your club to staff the table and have available information on how to sign up to receive a Junior Number and the e-newsletter.

Juniors are eligible to participate in all AKC events and receive a special recognition when handling their dog to a title in Companion Events and Performance Events.

Juniors are the future of our sport and we need to encourage young people and their families to join AKC clubs and participate in AKC Events.

Making AKC Canine Partners Part of your AKC RDO Days
AKC Canine Partners We hope that you're as excited as we are about the growth of the AKC Canine Partners Program and welcoming mixed breeds into the AKC family. Including AKC Canine Partners into your AKC RDO Day is a great way to broaden your club's ability to attract volunteers, potential new members and entries to your events. Your club will be exposed to a whole new pool of dog lovers that can share in the excitement of doing more with their dog.

Some ideas:
  • Pass out the ACP brochures and enrollment forms that will be sent to you with additional educational materials in your AKC RDO Day kit
  • Include mixed breeds in your AKC Rally®, Agility and Obedience demonstrations
  • Highlight the official inclusion of mixed breeds in your AKC RDO Day media outreach.
AKC Canine Good Citizen and AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days
Canine Good Citizen

Hosting or thinking about hosting an AKC Canine Good Citizen test sometime in September? If you do, register it as an AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days event and you'll receive a free packet of educational materials to distribute to your participants and students. AKC CGC testing is often one of the most popular parts of all AKC RDO Days, and obviously, a great indicator of responsible ownership!

Check out the CGC program's blog and Facebook page!
