State Capitol News
Beginning in 2008, the Government Relations department launched In Session, a quarterly newsletter for members of Congress and their staff. It provides information on pending federal legislation, as well as feature articles on AKC programs and events, an interview with a dog-loving member of the Capitol community and an in-depth article focusing on a particular policy area of importance to purebred dog owners.
Due to our state-level groups/federations stating their desire to have a similar product for their representatives, we have created a new version of In Session specifically for State legislators! Like its Federal cousin, this newsletter will also be quarterly, but more material will be specific to states’ interests. Read the inaugural issue or contact AKC’s Government Relations department at 919-816-3720 or doglaw@akc.org for more information.
State Economic Impact Statistics
Additionally, is there new legislation being proposed in your state or locality that will affect you, your dog and your rights as a dog owner? AKC’s Government Relations Toolbox gives you the tools you need to address canine legislation.
There are a variety of resources available in the toolbox, but one particularly helpful item from a public relations standpoint is the 2009 State Economic Impact Statistics. The database provides a “one-sheeter” for each state containing statistics for the state over the past three years, including how many licensed/sanctioned events were held in the area and how many dogs participated. The sheet also provides an estimate of the millions of dollars generated annually within the local economy from spending on purebred dogs in the state, including spending on events, dog clubs, show exhibitors, breeding and basic dog care, and the spectator gate generating additional revenues statewide.
Provide these statistics along with an Economic Benefits of AKC Dog Shows brochure or flyer to your local representatives as well as any reporters that cover your annual show to get the word out about the benefits of AKC events taking place in your area. |
