Getting Dressed Up for the Holiday - Keep These Tips in Mind

Sasha is ready for the upcoming patriotic holiday in her red, white and blue dress and matching ribbons in this cute photo of this Canine Partners enrollee submitted by her owner Denise Daughtery. Note that Sasha is playing it safe by wearing her collar and identification tags too.

It’s fun to get your dog dressed up for the holidays – and many dogs love wearing clothes. But keep a few safety tips in mind.

  • Make sure your dog or cat has proper identification on underneath that cute costume.
  • Keep a watch to make sure your dog is not getting overheated. Remember they have on a fur coat already!
  • Do a safety check - Double check outfits to make sure they do not interfere with your dog’s movement or breathing and that they do not have parts that can get caught on objects or that your dog can reach and chew off.
  • Always supervise your dog when they are wearing their favorite outfit. Never leave them unattended.
  • Sometimes other dogs react strangely to dogs in costume because dogs use body language to convey important messages to other canines. Best to take off the outfit before they go play with or greet other dogs.
