In the fall of 2014, Kathleen Zuidema of Washington was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Now, with the cancer having spread to her liver and brain, her goal of overcoming the disease is being replaced with another difficult task: finding a home for her beloved three dogs.
On March 5, Zuidema took to Facebook to write a devastating letter to friends.
“My heart is breaking, and I'm sobbing as I write this,” she said in the post (see below). “Things are now progressing to the point where I need to secure a home for the posse.”
"The posse" is three Australian Shepherds, Autumn Moon, Moka Luka, and Finnegan, who range in age from 4 to 11.
“They are a package deal,” she said, adding that they are well trained and have been together their whole lives. “The thought of them being separated is more than l can bear.” She’s hoping to find someone who can be with them as often as possible.
“At home they are the perfect roommates,” she said. “They are wonderful to be with. The love they give and joy that they bring me every day has been unbelievable.”
The post was shared more than 20,000 times and gained the attention of media outlets, including Fox13 and USA Today. “I am so overwhelmed right now. I can't believe what is happening,” she wrote on her GoFundMe page, where she is hoping to raise money for medical expenses.
